It is an integrated electric utility company and has the reputation as the sole electricity distributor on the island of Jamaica. The company is engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity serving about 582,000 customers. It uses steam, diesel, hydroelectric and gas turbine generating units for the generation of electricity. It owns and operates five power plants, 28 generating plants and 54 substations. In addition, the company also owns distribution and transmission lines in an area of 14,000 kms. JPS also purchases power from five independent power producers based in Jamaica.
