The company is an energy and gas utility, engaged in supplying electricity to 1.3 million customers in Dane County and natural gas to 1.4 million customers in seven south-central and western Wisconsin counties. The majority of the electrical customers are located in the cities of Fitchburg, Madison, Middleton, and Monona and the gas customers are located in Elroy, Fitchburg, Lodi, Madison, Middleton, Monona, Prairie du Chien, Verona, and Viroqua.

MGE operates seven generating facilities fueled with coal, natural gas and wind. In addition, the company is also engaged in utilizing various renewable and environmental friendly sources of fuel like solar, biomass and paper derived fuels.
