Environment Protection Department (EPD) has started a solar energy project worth INR84 million in southern Punjab, the Dawn reported. Of the total amount INR34.505 million has been assigned for 2009. The project will consist of two types of packages; one will have only solar lights while the other will have solar lights as well as fans. The project is especially for non-electrified rural areas dwellers of south Punjab. Only 20% of the price will be paid by the recipient.

Rest will be paid by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA).

EPA Punjab's district offices will be used for collection of applications for solar packages, distribution, training and interaction with applicants and follow up action.

Training electricians and technicians for installation, repair and maintenance of solar systems will be taken care of by the EPA. Trainees who successfully complete the training shall be issued certificates.

Solar package providers will be responsible for operation and maintenance of installations for a year. And after that consumers will be responsible for operation and management of the systems. Solar technologies are usually maintenance free and solar panels usually have a shelf life of 25 years.

EPA field offices will have solar lights and fans installed for demonstration.

EPD Director General Shagufta Shahjahan said that the rising electricity cost and shortage of supply were serious concerns and there was a dire need to supplement energy supplies through alternate means. Shahjahan further continued that the solar technologies were environment friendly and had low operational cost along with portability and usage. Investment made through instant intervention will make aware both urban and rural communities about the uses of sunlight abundantly available, she added.
